Gig Review - Little Simz

Little Simz has come a long way from being an opener act for Schoolboy Q on his tour many years ago. She has slowly worked her way up the ladder from her first release in 2010 to her most recent tour for her critically acclaimed album No Thank You. The album in question received a nomination for the British Album Of The Year, a Libera Award for best hip-hop album, a Mercury Prize  and finally a Best Album at the MOBO Awards. This tour took place in a sold out O2 Arena in Glasgow on the 7th November 2023.

The opening acts were perfectly chosen giving the crowd a little teaser for what the vibe of the concert would turn out to be. The first act was Hak Baker who gave a interesting performance with his unique rapping/singing style. Best known for his songs that appear on FIFA the crowd was intrigued and exited for more. The second act was Osiris the God, Little Simz's producer who she kindly gave the stage to promote some of his music. The songs he played weren't the best but that is expected from an upcoming artist and the crowd didn't mind seeing a new face promoting music.

Starting off the show with one of her most popular songs, Silhouette, her entrance was majestic. With amazing visuals behind her and the crowd screaming at her entrance it was a great moment in the show. After a few songs she took the time to speak with the audience and did some audience work, getting everyone involved from the standing section to the balcony.

The base of the concert didn't disappoint with more eye popping visuals, smoke and fire to catch the audiences attention and take the show to the next level. Some highlights were the minute of silence she held for the ongoing war in Ukraine which was a beautiful thought for her fans that may be affected, although it was interrupted by a fan who fainted during the silence, later taken backstage and invited onto the stage by Little Simz herself. The fan was too nervous to come out but again, a kind gesture from herself. She also gave back more song snippets to fans hinting at more albums. She played a full unreleased song which was completely different from her usual style although the crowd seemed to love it.

As the concert was coming to a close she brought out two guitarists to perform her song Gorilla with her. This made the song so much better to hear live and got the audience fired up for more. She ended the concert with a fan favourite song, Woman, and gave her all into the performance as she knew it would be her last. After finishing she received a well deserved standing ovation which lasted around a minute, showing how much everyone enjoyed the show. Everyone wanted an encore however she exclaimed she was running out of time and couldn't do anymore songs, this would have been great but maybe it was too much to ask for.

Overall the No Thank You tour from Little Simz was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. After seeing her once I will definitely try to see her again as her concert design and fan service was one of the best i have ever seen. Playing songs from each of her albums she catered to everyone's preferences for an amazing show that lasted around 1hour and 30 minutes
